Di umili origini, Edward Saidi Tingatinga, il fondatore della famosa Tinga Tinga Art, nato nel 1932 in un piccolo villaggio chiamato Namochelia nella zona di Mindu, vicino al villaggio di Nakapanya nel sud della Tanzania, lentamente e abilmente ha iniziato un movimento che rivoluzionerà in seguito il modo in cui l’arte in Tanzania sarà realizzata.
Tinga Tinga Art è nata come un’idea semplice: utilizzare materiali riciclati ed a basso costo, come quadrati di masonite, frammenti di ceramica e vernice per biciclette.
Il suo stile era candido, al limite del surreale e dell’umorismo; la maggior parte dei suoi soggetti erano immagini iconiche africane stereotipate, come i paesaggi della fauna selvatica o della savana.
I dipinti di Edward Tingatinga divennero molto popolari tra residenti e turisti europei, così, col passare del tempo, egli fu in grado di trasformarsi, da artista part time, in artista a tempo pieno
